Out of The Ashes

October 2009

There couldn’t be a more exciting time to be an Outsider.

Hollywood experienced a lengthy period of time where money was of no concern, and Big Budget was part of the marketing strategy, “They made it for $150 mil, it must be good!”

The Great Recession kicked that approach out the door. Now Hollywood is going through a re-invention phase, which bodes well for Outsider-Filmmakers.

For us Outsiders, the Digital Age is our Prometheus. Digital video landed among us and gave us the light to film at low cost. So we remained outside of Olympus, shooting on our DVX’s and storing up our mini-dv tapes, making movies, honing our craft on the cheap.

In fact, we are the benefactors of two Prometheus’. The second Prometheus is the internet, our means of distribution. Outsiders are the generation who lived outside the studio system, shot our own films on digital, then strove on the cusp of the new distribution means, uploading to the internet.

It is all now coming together, and it’s exciting times.

I have only prophesied two things in my life: 1) A-Rod was going to tear up the 2009 post season (even after he’s gone 0 for 8 with six strikeouts against the Phillies, he is batting .350 with 5 homers and 12 runs batted in during the postseason.) And 2) The Outsiders will be the New Voices in Hollywood.

The ashes are piled nice and high in Hollywood, ready for the Phoenix to rocket out in 2010.
